Andy is right Hi-Hat all the way. The coffee is consistantly good and the baristas are always friendly.

In response to Lissa's question, it probably depends on what you're looking for in a coffeehouse, but for me it's all about how the coffee tastes. I really like the regular house blend brewed coffee at JP and the Cafe Americano at Muddy's makes Starbucks' equivalent seem like all noise and no nuance.

I had coffee at Blackdog a few weeks ago, and it was ok.

I haven't been to Muddy's recently, but I used to go there more often when I had friends in the area. I just remember how smoky it was.

I like Starbucks, and they are a big part of initiating the current coffee craze, so I gotta give them props for that. Their quality control process and employee training is top notch.

Lora worked at Starbucks for a while, and I was impressed with the organization as a whole, including offering benefits to employees that you won't find at the corner coffee shop. But, that being said, they are still corporate and can't match the environment of independent coffee shops.

Personally, I've been trying to focus my coffee resources on small shops and try as many as I can, because each one is a little different.

Broadway cafe in Westport probably gets the highest ranks in regards to my most interesting cafe experience. I remember one time there were a bunch of people getting stoned and trash talking Starbucks, which is right next door.

How does one come up with a favorite coffeehouse if one doesn't have time to make it an actual hangout? I'm assuming that what makes these places great is the ambiance. I'm just in and then back out again in about three minutes (or I'll go somewhere else), so I think that means I'm out of the running for choosing a fave.

I will say that no one had better nominate Starbucks. Why does their coffee taste burnt?

I'd add Muddy's at 51st & Oak to that list.

By the way, my husband is playing with a band at Homer's tomorrow night (Friday), so feel free to stop by and have a cup of coffee with me!
