My smartphone keeps me warm at night
April 6, 2007 – 12:35 pmYou may laugh, but my wife isn’t a fan of the trend to be available 24/7. She refers to my phone and laptop as my “second wife” whenever I’m up late and reminds me of the dangers when I’m driving while texting.
I had an earlier post about BlackBerry’s and the impact they have had on our lives.
There is an article today on AdAge about BlackBerry addiction called “Who, Me? I’m Not Addicted to My BlackBerry” that references the impact mobile communication has had in the agency world.
So, this week I am going out of town and not only am I taking my smartphone, I also have a Sprint Mobile Broadband card for my laptop. So, not only can I be on my phone, but also my laptop in the middle of Iowa where I’ll be this weekend.
Personally, I’m a lot more efficient and organized with my phone, because it has my whole life on there: contacts, schedule, to dos, emails, etc. If its not on my calendar, in most cases it won’t get done.
So sure, I’ll be traveling for work next week, but don’t worry, I’ll be available via phone, and when I’m not presenting, via text message and instant message.
Am I being weird in requesting even our nights out with friends or family events to be scheduled? I don’t think this is any different if its electronic or in an old school planner, just more convenient for me for it to all happen via an electronic calendar.
Are we getting too available and is technology controlling us? You tell me, because I’m all ears, but for now, I’ll continue to keep my phone on my bedstand at night.

Yesterday I watched a woman using her Blackberry with one hand while she was getting a manicure on the other hand. It made me glad that I haven’t taken the leap to a PDA phone.
I spend an enormous amount of time online as it is, so I’m hesitant to upgrade my technology to where I could potentially be online all the time. I think it’s nice to be able to get away now and then. Heck, sometimes I don’t even carry my regular phone with me…
