Text messaging in the UK: a few services I just don’t get

July 5, 2007 – 12:32 pm

I was checking out some differences between US and UK text messaging services at http://www.text.it/text/messaging_info.cfm.

I understand that people in other countries use mobile data services more than we do here in the US, but for the most part, the SMS services are pretty standard between the US and UK: weather, stocks, travel, horoscopes, jokes, games, search, etc.

There were a few services that I just didn’t get: Txt2Table and SMS Carfinder.

Txt2Table:
Txt2Table lets you order drinks in pubs, clubs and bars via a text message from your mobile phone. Text the name of your pub, table number and order to 84868 and (provided the pub is in the database!) you’ll get your order delivered to your table.

— I can’t imagine the operational disaster this one could turn out to be.

SMS Carfinder
Mobile car buying service where car buyers can source vehicles using a mobile phone accessing smscarfinder.com national UK dealer network of over 25,000 cars.

— Buying a car seems like a pretty big purchase to leave to a few text messages. One of the reasons for using the service from the site: no need to spend hours reading magazines and researching on the internet. Don’t they understand that there is a good reason why people spend time researching what they buy? Its a big decision and one of the largest purchases next to a house.

PS - If you are interested, feel free to buy me a drink at http://www.buymeabeer.com/ next time I’m in the UK. Now this service I would use.
