iPhone review - my brief take

Apple iPhone mobile electronic device

Last week I gave a presentation on the Apple iPhone.

Everyone has an opinion on the device, so I thought I would share mine after using it for a couple weeks. I’d be interested in hearing about your experience with the iPhone as well.

The agenda for my presentation was as follows:

  • Press
  • Multiple use device
  • Form factor
  • Features
  • Competition: Nokia, BlackBerry, LG & others
  • Feedback
  • iPhone 2.0
  • Fit for Barkley?
  • Summary
  • Q & A

The iPhone had one of the largest launches for an electronics device that I know, including traditional press and new media outlets.

I won’t go into all of the features, but I wish it had a higher resolution camera, Microsoft Exchange integration (for calendar and e-mail), GPS and access to a 3G network support.

How does the device fare against the BlackBerry Curve, Nokia N95, Helio Ocean & PRADA phone by LG? I’ll leave that answer up to consumers and organizations that will respond with their wallets.

I think it is a great consumer device, even if they haven’t worked out all of the activation and issues syncing with iTunes.

Without Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Notes support, not to mention security features that are available for BlackBerry server, it may be a while yet for Enterprise adoption. Not to mention the huge investment in existing BlackBerry phones and related services and accessories.

I’ll close with some feedback from industry experts.

“The iPhone is - and I can’t stress this enough – not an enterprise class device”
- Benjamin Gray, analyst with Forrester Research, July 9 eWeek

Gartner is advising its clients to forgo the iPhone, but analyst Van Baker said keeping out the device will be a difficult task for IT.

“People are going to bring these things in, and IT is going to have to figure out how to deal with them, especially when it’s a C-level exec”

The iPhone Project – Frank Hayes, Computerworld, July 9 2007

  2. I read an interesting article about this on PC World (which I can’t seem to find the link to anymore). Basically, the article’s take is that Apple’s main focus is on making for a better end user experience, where as, other OEMs focus on just marketing towards the enterprise buyer. You can only spend so much time and energy on a product before you release it and its all about priorities.

The other thing that makes Apple so hot is that they aren’t afraid to dump their previous art and do something totally new. Enterprise customers aren’t exactly excited about losing their existing investments. (That’s why vista adoption is so slow. If it works, why mess with it?)

And yet another mark against Apple in the enterprise world is that they don’t like to show off their road maps and that’s something that makes it hard for an enterprise customer to embrace them.
