Social Network Traffic Surpasses Web-based Email in UK
November 12, 2007 – 1:20 pmI like to follow trends in the UK for things such as mobile marketing, because they tend to be a few years ahead.
Today I read (via MarketingVOX) that Social Network Traffic Surpasses Web-based Email in UK.
Younger internet users — those age 18 to 34 — tend to visit social-network sites more than they do web email sites, whereas the reverse is true for those 35+, Goad writes.
Andy and I have discussed this trend and have observed it in others here in the US. I would say the trend is more within the 16-26 bracket (high school to recent college graduates), but that is just my observation. Many organizations are now blocking social network sites from access at work, but with the rise of mobile social networking, I think this trend will continue to grow in usage amongst the older demographic as well.

I think my favorite quotes from a teen report, EVER, was this, “Email is for OLD people!” http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20061002-7877.html

It’s odd that the same workplaces that are blocking social networks for their employees are the ones trying to figure out how to use social networks for advertising! Go figure!
